Vanita Gupta tapped for senior Justice Department post

Gupta currently leads a civil rights coalition that includes many leading AAPI advocacy groups.

President-elect Biden will tap former Justice Department civil rights chief Vanita Gupta to serve as Associate Attorney General, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Gupta is the president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, a coalition that includes many leading Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) advocacy groups.

Nominating Gupta to the Justice Department's third-highest position suggests the Biden administration will focus on voting rights and police oversight. Gupta also led the Leadership Conference amid the Trump era's fiercest legal battles, challenging the president's effort to include citizenship question on 2020 census.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
