Today, we're excited to announce that The Yappie will join a diverse cohort of 10 newsrooms launching reporting projects ahead of the 2022 midterm elections as part of the Solutions Journalism Network’s Advancing Democracy initiative. This opportunity was made possible by our amazing friends and partners at Self Evident and AZI Media, whom we are honored to work with over the next six months.

Context: Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) have been historically disenfranchised and face numerous barriers to the ballot box today—including disinformation, language access, or lack of political engagement.

  • In collaboration with Self Evident and AZI, we’ll be producing in-depth stories focused on how AAPI immigrant communities are tackling those barriers to create meaningful access to American democracy.

What to expect: Our team will strengthen our reporting on topics already familiar to longtime Yappie readers, such as digital misinformation, efforts by both political parties to mobilize AAPI voters, and the deportation of Southeast Asian refugees.

  • These were key issues for AAPI communities during the last two election cycles and remain critical ahead of next year’s midterms.
  • Have questions or tips? Reach out to our editorial director and project lead Shawna Chen at [email protected].

The Yappie is entirely volunteer-run and we rely on support from our readers to continue our coverage. If you find value in our mission to inform and empower AAPI communities, please consider making a donation or forward our briefings to friends and colleagues.

We're excited for what's ahead and our team is grateful for your continued readership.
