The Yappie will receive $10,000 after emerging as the top student venture in the 2022 Next Challenge for Media & Journalism, supported by Temple University and the Lenfest Institute, American Public Media Group's Glen Nelson Center announced Thursday.

"This $10,000 award is presented to a news and information, civic engagement, or distribution channel project created by U.S.-based college and university students,” said Lily Kim, General Manager of APM Studios. "The division judges loved the mission and purpose of what The Yappie is doing, and were so impressed with the content they offer to a very underserved community."

“Now is a critical time for coverage of Asian American and Pacific Islander advocacy, because our lives and our communities are at stake,” said Dan Hu, who accepted the award on behalf of The Yappie. “The $10,000 will go towards fairly compensating our writers, expanding our coverage, and reaching more people. We’re grateful for the award and the experience of working on the Next Challenge, and we would not be here without the wonderful mentorship of Suzi Kim Scott.”

“This is only the beginning of our support for The Yappie,” said Jeff Freeland Nelson, Executive Director of Glen Nelson Center. “We will continue to work with The Yappie team as they strengthen their business plan and continue to grow as an important source of news and information in the public interest.”

Founded in 2018, The Yappie is a nonpartisan publication dedicated to tracking the rise of AAPI political power. It was one of 265 early stage media startups and student-led ventures who participated in the 2022 Next Challenge, a national competition designed to “promote equity in media” and “revolutionize how we inform and connect society in the future.”
