Pulse: Asian voters fear physical violence, armed militias at polls

AAPIs are highly energized but remain less likely to vote than other minority groups.

Here’s our occasional round-up of polls involving Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) voters that you need to know about this month…

VOTER FEARS — 30% of Asian Americans are concerned about physical violence or armed militias at their voting locations, and 29% worry the government could use in-person voting to serve warrants or arrest people, according to an Axios/Ipsos poll conducted October 8–15.

EARLY CLUES — Preliminary data from the 2020 Cooperative Election Study based on a sample size fielded by YouGov shows Asian Americans are set to vote for Biden by more than a 2-to-1 margin, the New York Times reports.

BATTLEGROUND  FIGHTS— AAPI voters in ten swing states favor Biden and appear to be “much more enthusiastic” to cast their ballots than before, according to a September survey unveiled last week by the Garin-Hart-Yang Research Group and the National Education Association

TURNOUT ISSUES — Asian Americans still appear less likely to vote than other minority groups, according to an aggregation of eight polls conducted by Business Insider and SurveyMonkey from August through early October.

VOTER PRIORITIES — Health care, education, and national security are the top concerns of Asian American registered voters over the age of 50, according to an AARP analysis of the 2020 Asian American Voter Survey.
